First thoughts put down, no time to edit, sorry - further trigger warnings as in the article.
Coming out of work at midnight, the first thing I thought was "Crap, if I have to run away then I'm gonna lose these [loose] shoes". The actual first thing. The second thing was wondering whether my cord mini-skirt/leggings combo counted as provocative, trying to figure out how worried I should be about heading home.
This is what rape culture does to women - makes it so that they feel they have to jump at every shadow, their only defense to become shadows themselves.
It's still, in many places, a masculine world where a woman standing out from a crowd and then not wanting sexual attention makes her a c***tease, where dressing in clothes that make her feel pretty and yet rejecting advances makes her a fraud in some way. That's part of the mentality behind those rules, despite how much we think we've come past it: dress at all like a slut, you must be asking for it. After all, why else would you be wearing that/out that late/partying with them/not with your friends?
It sickens me. And yet I've been conditioned well. I don't think I'll wear those shoes to work tonight...teainthetardishttp://drinkingteainthetardis.tumblr.comnoreply@blogger.com
