They idea that in some sense they are both aiming at similar goals - convincing people to consider the evidence and challenge their intuitions - is new to me, and I might have to re-shape my world view to fit it in :)

I wonder though..... if we could imagine a world without kyriarchal power structures, would there still be bias? I'm inclined to think that everyone would still be biased by their different backgrounds - because there would still be *difference* even if it wasn't hierarchical, and we would still base our intuitions on our own experiences - but we would all be more aware of the diversity of viewpoints that exist, and less likely to dismiss someone else's perspective immediately.Annalyticahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06402598855200483948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8828823099864315938.post-53020879350146968172011-05-20T23:01:41.750+01:002011-05-20T23:01:41.750+01:00This is a little tangential, but I think both Happ...This is a little tangential, but I think both Happydork and the Lashings bloggers would be interested in this post on 'academic' terms - http://gauchesinister.wordpress.com/2010/06/21/on-nationality-class-and-linguistic-privilege/ which has a not-totally-oppositional but alternative angle that I found thought-provoking.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8828823099864315938.post-71702063805071555282011-05-20T20:45:12.790+01:002011-05-20T20:45:12.790+01:00Yes. It seems to me that the...Yes. This. So much this.

It seems to me that these men's empiricism is limited, at best, as long as they remain unaware of the biases in their own thinking which come from their submersion in kyriarchal culture. I wonder how many people have tried to make this subtle point to them, and have been dismissed as if, like Storm, they are saying "science is just another form of religion"?

This paragraph in particular has really made me think. Thank you.

I am put in mind of the way that certain academic/"scientific" styles of discussion, debate, etc are lauded as the best type of discourse, or the type of discourse most likely to lead to the truth, even though these styles are not well-suited to anti-oppression conversations. It's something I worry a lot about -- both as a sciency-type-person who may use it to silence others and as an anti-oppression-type-person who may silence herself because of it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8828823099864315938.post-2462302164375031082011-05-20T11:41:58.523+01:002011-05-20T11:41:58.523+01:00Yesss.
