LGBT Community Research

The terms ‘LGBT community’ and ‘LGBT communities’ are often used, but how much do we know about how these are understood – or experienced?

A new UK research project aims to address these questions, and explore the impact on lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) health, wellbeing and ‘quality of life’, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of the ‘Connected Communities’ programme.

Enduring Love?

The Enduring Love? project is a mixed methods study on long-term adult couple relationships. The findings will add an important dimension to understandings of personal and family lives in contemporary society.


Increasing knowledge on how long-term relationships work and the emotional and practical relationship work that goes into sustaining them, will facilitate more effective points of intervention, informing the improvement of policy making, governance and support services, and relationship education.

Job opportunity: researching queer-identifying religious young people

Newcastle University is advertising for a full-time Research Assistant/Associate to work on a project called "Making space for queer-identifying religious young people." The closing date is 1st June.


From their website:

"This is a case-study exploration of Christianity and sexuality in young people’s lives, investigating the everyday practices, experiences and identities of queer (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) young people involved in the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in the UK. The post is aimed at those with strong research experience, with a background in in-depth interviewing. We anticipate that the post will appeal to Sociologists who have recently completed their PhD, but encourage applications also from researchers in related social sciences with appropriate research expertise.

Feminist women wanted for PhD research

Carly Guest is looking for female volunteers aged between 18 and 35 to take part in a study of women’s feminist identities.



As a participant in this study, you would be asked to take part in an interview about how you came to see yourself as a feminist and what being feminist means to you. This will involve talking about personal photos and images that say something about your feminism.

Your participation would involve one interview lasting approximately between one and two hours.

While Lashings were in York for the 'Carnival of Feminist Cultural Activism' (there will be a write-up coming, I've just been very busy!), we met lots of shiny people. One of them was Alexa Athelstan, who is doing some awesome work on queer feminities. She's looking for participants who identify as feminine in an alternative, queer, or subversive way, to take part in her research project. There's a questionnaire, an artistic representation, and an interview - that's a chance to make pretty pictures and talk about yourself - so what are you waiting for? Wanted: Bisexual-identified women to participate in research

Sarah Robinson at Huddersfield University is researching bisexual women's identities and is looking for research participants. She says:

Overall, the research aims to develop our understanding of women who define their sexuality as ‘bisexual’. More specifically it aims to:

1 Explore the ways in which bisexual women narrate their identity in the 21st Century.

2 Explore the extent to which bisexual women experience ‘biphobia’ or discrimination.

3 Explore how identifying as a bisexual woman impacts on her lived experience.

I am looking also at how women maintain their bisexual identity when engaged in a monogamous relationship. The women I require don’t necessarily have to be in a monogamous relationship – just be able to speak about the difficulties/or not associated with it.

Participants will be asked to keep a diary for four weeks. They will be asked to include details of specific events that they feel are related to some aspect of their sexual identity. This will be the first stage in developing an understanding of the everyday lives of the participants.

Following on from this I hope to conduct an interview which will seek to explore any issues that may have arisen out of the participants’ diaries.

Following the life story interview participants will be supplied with a disposable camera and asked to take photographs of people, places and objects that are meaningful in relation to their sexual identity. Participants will be requested to take at least 12 photographs within a week of receiving the camera. They will be supplied with a stamp addressed envelope to return the camera after they have completed the task. When the photographs have been developed the participants will take part in a photo-assisted interview.
